THE SON
When we say Christ
is the Son of God, this does not mean that Christ came by means
of intermarriage. Son is not intended to mean a physical relationship
or birth by procreation. We only say Christ is the Son of God
to mean that Christ came from God. He is related to no physical
father so He is related to God. The word son as used in common
language, in the Qur'an, and in prophetic conversation does not
indicate physical breeding.
Son in Common Language
In many linguistic
expressions, the word son is not used to indicate physical generation.
For example, we say that students are sons of knowledge; citizens
are sons of the homeland; an Egyptian is a son of the Nile; and
an Arabic is a son of the desert.
Son as Used in the
Qur'an
The word son is occasionally
used in the Qur'an when it does not mean physical generation.
This you can observe in the following references:
Sura al-Baqara 2:214,
"Whatever you bestow in charity must go to your parents and
to your kinsfolk, to the orphan and to the poor man and to the
stranger." Interpreters say that stranger (Ibn al-Sabil)
indicates the traveller. Al Iman al-Nasafi and Shaikh Hasanayn
Makhluf said, "He was called a stranger (Ibn al-Sabil), for
permanently sticking to the road."
Son in Muslim Tradition
In the Muslim tradition
originating from God (Hadith Kudsi), it is stated, "the rich
are my agents and the poor are members of my family (my sons)."
Do we understand by this that God married a wife and gave birth
to children who are the poor?! Surely not!
Therefore, the term
son of God does not mean procreation in human terms, but rather,
this expression was intended to attribute or relate Christ to
God, and not infidelity or partnership with God! For sonship originates
in the spiritual fatherhood of God. God is the Father and Christ
is the Son, only in a special, unique meaning which does no apply
to any other.
One may ask "What
caused the church to believe that Christ is the Son of God?"
The answer is found in the evidence for Christ's deity.
Isa
43:10
Ye
are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen:
that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he:
before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after
me.
Isa
44:6
Thus
saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of
hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there
is no God.

Tim 2:5
For
there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man
Christ Jesus;
Mark
12:29
And
Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear,
O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
But
Christians believe in an everlasting without beginning and no
end, who always existed, revealing himself as the father, son
and holy spirit.
Ex
3:14
And
God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou
say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Rev
1:8
I
am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
And
before we discuss the deity of the son let us look at the relation
between the father and the son:
The
Son of God:
Jesus
was called the sun of God more than forty times. And the word
“his son” was used many times over.
John 5:18
18
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not
only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father,
making himself equal with God.
The
only Son:
John
1:18
No
one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in
the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
The
word “ Son of God “ was used more than fifty times, and the claim
that some people use that it has the same as us ( all people)
being also the sons of God, is false. The meaning
between the two is completely different.
Mark
12:6
Therefore
still having one son, his beloved, he also sent him to them last,
saying, 'They will respect my son.'
The
Son of the Highest:
Luke
1:32-33
He
will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and
the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33
And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His
kingdom there will be no end."
Beloved
Son:
Matt
3:16-17
When
He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water;
and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit
of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly
a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son,
in whom I am well pleased."
My
Father
John
15:1
"I
am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
John
10:27-30
My
sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither
shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has
given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch
them out of My Father's hand. 30 I and My Father are one."
The
Father and the Son:
Matt
11:27
All
things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows
the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except
the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
It
becomes very clear after reading these verses, that Christ was
no ordinary being; neither was he a prophet, nor an angel from
heaven. No one was ever called “the Wonderful” as we read in Isaiah.
And the word wonderful (pele' in Greek) means a miracle or marvelous
things, defines the unlimited nature of the Christ, which can
only be known by God himself.
All the good prophets
and messengers were inspired by the eternal word of God. But Christ
is the Word of God in its essence, on which all the creative and
loving powers of God centre. Not only did He talk, but He also
lived out what He said. The mightiness of God appeared clearly
in his words and in his deeds, confirming one other.
In many instances,
we read expressions about him like the following: "When Jesus
had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his
teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not
as their (traditionalist) teachers of the law" (Matthew 7:28-29).
And when His opponents tried to seize Him through their servants,
these servants were moved by His words and their consciences were
touched. They did not dare to come near him. They returned to
their leaders mumbling: "No one ever spoke the way this man
does" (John 7:46).
Listen to some of the
sayings of Christ which He uttered in all humility:
"I am the light
of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life" (John 8:12).
"I am the bread
of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes
to me will never be thirsty" (John 6:35).
"Love your enemies,
bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray
for those who persecute you" (Matthew 6:44).
"Do not judge,
or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others,
you will be judges, and with the measure you use, it will be measured
to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's
eye an pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can
you say to your brother, `Let me take the speck out of your eye`,
when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite,
first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see
clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye" (Matthew
7:1-5).
If you meditate on
these sayings, you will understand that Christ is the light of
the world, giving peace and true life to those who obey his words.
All the other prophets
came with only a part of the divine light shining into the dark
world, as the gentle moonlight does. They faded away like the
crescent. But Christ is like the blazing sun, shining with all
the power of its light. How can we follow the moon when the sun
is rising? Christ is the true light! He fulfilled the prophecies
and proclaimed the new law, which is love. He himself is love
become flesh, so he was entitled to say: "I am the way and
the truth and the life. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my
words will never pass away" (John 14:6 and Matthew 24:35).
